<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: W-Sitting</image:title>
<image:caption>W-sitting places the hips and knees in an extreme position, and this repeated stress to the joints over time increases a child's risk for joint issues or pain. When in a W-sit position the legs provide a wide base of support, requiring very little activation of the core muscles to sit up. This can contribute to core weakness in some children, especially children with low muscle tone. Lastly, because of the wide base of support and the position of the legs, it is not as easy to transition in and out of sitting, so some children may be less dynamic during their play.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: W-Sitting</image:title>
<image:caption>If you notice W-sitting you can either use a verbal cue or assist your child into a different sitting position, depending on their age. I always recommend using a consistent verbal cue between all caregivers, even if your child does not understand yet as this will make it easier in the long run!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Any toy that suctions can be a great option for play when baby is prating sitting in the highchair, or standing when they are older. The main benefit is they can’t drop or throw it, keeping them entertained a little longer especially if you are multitasking!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: Container Toys - Is a baby carrier considered a container?</image:title>
<image:caption>Based on our definition above, yes a baby carrier restricts free movement. However for a parent looking to keep baby content while having their hands free, the baby carrier has some additional benefits to other containers. Baby gets contact with their caregiver which can both soothe and support the infant-parent bond. Baby is more upright against gravity allowing for some activation of their postural muscles for head and trunk control. If the parent is moving around baby gets variable input and their postural muscles have to respond to this input vs the repeated and predictable movement pattern of a swing for example. Another benefit in the baby carrier is that baby is off the back of their head which can decrease their risk of flat head syndrome.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Importance of Play - Play is a crucial part of development! Play is not only fun, for babies and children play is is a key part of their physical and mental development. Play is how they learn to interact with their world, and learn from their world! In many ways we can look at play as their “job.” From the outside play may just look like a baby engaged with a book, a toddler doing a puzzle, or a kid on the playground. But under the surface these children are building complex neuronal connections for balance, coordination, problem-solving, emotional regulation, social skills, and more.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: Torticollis - Torticollis can be present at birth or develop over the first couple months of life. When we think about baby in the womb, most babies have their head in one position for the last several weeks. When they are born, their brain still associates the womb with comfort (think about the many ways we try to replicate the womb to soothe babies like shushing/white noise, rocking, swaddling, etc) and many babies position their head the same way it was in the womb for comfort! There can also be environmental or medical reasons why a baby prefers to position their head in a certain way. Any repeated positioning can lead to torticollis. Torticollis can feel confusing because the most common presentation is to tilt their head one way and rotate it the opposite way! Don’t worry, we will be able to tell you exactly where your baby is tight.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: Tummy Time! - What are the benefits of tummy time?</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the principles of motor learning is variety. Babies need a variety of positions and experiences to learn new skills! And since babies born today in general spend more time on their backs, they need help from their caregivers to introduce a variety of positions! (This is also where I like to emphasize that term variety. Everyone talks about tummy time, but time to play and explore active movement on their back and playing in side-lying are also important!) Research shows us that babies under 6 months old who do tummy time more then once per day score higher on gross motor tests and achieve rolling, sitting, and crawling earlier then babies who do not play on their tummy. There are also findings that baby’s who do tummy time have improved communication and problem solving skills in the first 2 years of life. Another big concern for parents today is flat head syndrome and tummy time can support a round head shape since there is no pressure on the back of the skull. (Learn more about Torticollis here and flat head syndrome here!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Every Parent Needs to Know About: Tummy Time! - What about baby wearing?</image:title>
<image:caption>Wearing your baby chest to chest in a carrier does encourage activation of the extensor muscles (muscles along the back of the body,) but to a lesser degree then tummy time on the floor. Baby also has less freedom of movement in the carrier. I love babywearing, for myself and my clients. It is a great way to incorporate activation of the extensor muscles when you need your hands free (vs placing baby on their back in a swing for example,) and also is a great way to introduce tummy time to very young or very fussy babies. And there are lots of other benefits to babywearing! However, I do not consider babywearing a replacement for tummy time play where baby is working against gravity and exploring independent movement. So I recommend a mix of both!</image:caption>
